Clothing Guide
What do I wear to the photo session?
This is one of the most common questions I get for all of my bookings with the exception of weddings. And it’s true that the clothing that you choose for your photo session influences the look of the images more than anything apart from the photographer’s editing and the lighting at the time of the session. So let’s get into it!
Chances are, the photographer will have an idea of what type of clothing they would prefer based on their own editing style. For example, a light and airy style photographer might prefer you do not choose deep, earthy tones and heavier materials, as it will be antithetical to their editing style.
I define myself as a journalistic photographer, which gives me some wiggle room as it pertains to clothing choices. But there are certainly preferred looks, and there are always no-nos.
YES to: deep, rich colors that compliment but do not match. Examples of this are; everyone wears shades of brown, earthy reds, mustards, even a rich emerald green will compliment this color scheme.
NO to: heavily patterned clothing. I’m not saying all patterns are bad, but if they are heavy looking, or have clashing colors, it’s best to avoid. As an add-on to this, NO brand names or logos on your clothes.
YES to: different textures. Textures can be just as important as the colors themselves. Adding flowing silk, luxurious velvet, or gauzy lace can create greater depth.
NO to: matching clothes. This is something that I consider more of a personal preference, as if that’s what you want in your family photos, then that is your choice. However, for my own personal preference I would rather have clothes that compliment, not that are exactly the same.
All this being said, ultimately, they are images for you. These are photos that I am taking to capture a time in your life, and I want it to reflect who you are, and your relationships with the people in your life.
